원 안의 생명, 우주안의 자연

박소영의 작업은 동양화의 전통적 재료체험과 기법을 중심에 두고 이루어지는 한편 다루는 소재 역시 전통적인 화목에서 가져오고 있다. 대나무와 매화, 포도를 연상시키는 이미지가 뒤섞인 독특한 이 그림은 사군자와 민화 등에서 흔하게 접하는 식물을 모티프로 삼고 있는 것 같다. 생각해보면 그 식물이미지는 단지 구체적인 사물이 아니라 한국의 전통 문화 속에서 의미를 지니고 있는 특별한 도상, 자연이미지다. 과거 이 땅에 살던 조상들은 저 이미지를 통해 선비의 지조와 정신세계 혹은 군자의 도리 또는 다산과 풍요로움을 일러 받고자 했다. 작가는 그 이미지들을 하나로 묶거나 그것들이 상호침투 하는 풍경을 만들었다. 포도알 속에 매화나 대나무가 자리하고 있거나 대나무에 포도 알이 주렁주렁 매달려 있는 듯하다. 유교적 이념과 샤머니즘이 한 몸에서 피어나거나 고고한 선비정신과 민중들의 간절한 기복신앙, 염원이 두루 얽혀 있는 상황을 연상시킨다. 아울러 장지위에 수묵화 기법의 스미고 번지는 효과와 농담의 변화를 적극 구사하고 있으며 그 위에 은분과 금분을 안료에 개어 입히고 있다. 수묵과 채색, 선염과 불투명하게 얹혀 지는 기법의 공존으로 인한 두 층위가 동시에 자리하면서 겹을 이룬다. 그 겹/결은 이질적인 것을 아우르고 그 모두를 존중하는 방법론이자 여러 시간대가 공존하는 지층을 떠올려준다. 아득한 시간의 자취와 풍화의 흔적을 깔고 있는 바탕(종이 자체의 질감과 색채가 두드러지게 자리하고 있는) 위로 저마다 다른 원형들, 그리고 그 안에 자리한 대나무와 매화의 겹쳐짐은 평면의 화면에 묘한 공간감을 자극하면서 구상과 추상, 기하학과 자연, 개별과 전체, 선과 점, 수묵과 채색, 투명과 불투명 등의 이원적인 요소들이 공존하는 장면을 선사한다.

While centering on the traditional material experience and techniques of East Asian painting on one hand, Park So-young’s works likewise borrows its subject matter from those of traditional painting. This unique painting, where images reminiscent of bamboos, plum blossoms, and grapes intermingle, plants commonly found in subject matter and genres such as the “four gentlemen” (subject matter of traditional East Asian painting: plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo) and folk paintings seem to be the motif. When we think about them, those plant images are not simply specific objects but are special icons, natural images, that hold significance in the traditional culture of Korea. Through those images, our ancestors who lived in this land in the past sought to succeed to the integrity and mental world of scholars, duties of Confucian gentlemen (junzi), or fertility and richness. The artist combines those images or creates landscapes where they interpenetrate. Plum blossoms or bamboos seem to be placed inside individual grapes, and grapes seem to hang in clusters from bamboos. Confucian ideology and shamanism bloom from the same body, and the images are reminiscent of situations where the lofty scholarly spirit and the populace’s yearnings and earnest prayers for blessings are entangled together. In addition, the artist actively makes use of the seeping and spreading effect of the ink wash technique and changes in the shading on traditional Korean paper (jangji), and applies over it silver and gold powder mixed with paint and water. Because of the coexistence of ink wash and color, of the techniques of staining by smearing (xuanran) and laying on opaquely, two levels simultaneously exist and form layers. Those layers/textures constitute a methodology that embraces heterogeneous things and respects them all and recall strata where diverse eras coexist. Against a background bearing traces of remote time and marks of weathering (with the texture and color of the paper itself prominent), the overlapping of disparate circles and of bamboos and plum blossoms placed inside them evokes a peculiar sense of space on the flat screen and presents a scene where binary elements such as figuration and abstraction, geometry and nature, individuality and totality, lines and dots, ink wash painting and color painting, and transparency and opacity coexist.
