1. 작가노트
"이수관지以水觀之란 물로써 세상을 바라보다" 는 송창애의 예술세계를 관통하는 핵심사상이다. 물은 모든 작품의 소재이자 주된 표현기법, 그리고 그 안에 함축된 의미를 담는 하나의 그릇이다. ‘워터스케이프 waterscape’ 시리즈는 '물로 그린 물 그림'으로 물이라는 메타포를 통한 생명의 근원과 본질, 그리고 존재의 원형에 대한 직관적, 감각적 경험의 산물이다. 흐르는 물을 분사하여 화면의 바탕색을 지우고 씻어내는 방식으로 형상을 만드는 '물 드로잉 water drawing' 기법은 송창애 작가만의 맑고 투명한 독자적 조형세계의 근간이다. ‘허虛’를 중시하는 동양사상에 바탕을 둔 이러한 조형어법은 수아일체水我一體에 의한 허실상생虛實相生의 현대적인 조형적 구현이라 할 수 있다.
‘Waterscape_무가보주無價寶珠’는 우리 모두가 태어날 때 지니고 있는 보배구슬을 은유한다. 적막하고 짙푸른 심해 속에서 피어오르는 맑고 영롱한 물꽃은 불완전한 존재의 완전성에 대한 원초적 그리움이자 본성회귀에 대한 표상이다.
‘Isugwanji (以水觀之)’, which means ‘Looking at the world through water’, is a core idea that passes through the entire artworks of Chang-Ae Song. Water is not only a material for all her works, but also a creative expression technique. Furthermore, water is a vessel containing her conceptual and emotional implications in it. Since her artworks are drawings with a material of water, her waterscape series is a product of intuitive and sensory experience of the origin and nature of life for her, which envisions the prototype of existence through the metaphor of water. Her expression technique called 'water drawing', is creative since she creates images by directly spraying flowing water to erase and wash the background color. It is the basis of her original artworks since this formative method is based on the oriental philosophy, which emphasizes 'Huh(虛)' which means empty space in mind, space, and time. With her own original expression technique, she intends to express this oriental philosophy as a modern formative realization of traditional concept.
'Waterscape_ Mugaboju (無價寶珠)' is a metaphor for the intrinsic value of each of us as we are born. Therefore, her artworks symbolize the primitive nostalgia for human nature that craves the perfectiveness of human beings by expressing water flowers that blossoms in deep oceans.
2. 경력
송창애 작가는 1972년 서울 생으로 숙명여자대학교에서 한국화를 전공하며 학사와 석사를 수여하였다. 이후 미국으로 이주하여 오리건대학에서 두번 째 석사 학위를 통해 우수졸업생으로 선정되어 학장상을 수여한 바 있다. 2013년 홍익대학교 동양화과 박사학위를 수여하였다.
2016년 송창애 작가는 한국사립미술관과 한국문화예술위원회가 주관하는 “코리안 아티스트 프로젝트 2016”에 선정되었으며, 폴락-크래스너 재단, 서울문화재단, 앤더슨 랜치 아티스트 레지던시 프로그램 외 다수의 지원금을 받은 바 있다. 주요 전시는 63 아트 미술관, 제주도립미술관, 제주현대미술관, 소마미술관, 영은미술관, Tacoma Art Museum, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art등에서 발표한 바 있다. 송창애 작가는 현재 서울을 기반으로 작품 활동에 매진하고 있다.
Chang-Ae Song (Republic of Korea, 1972-) was born in Seoul and earned her BFA and MFA in Oriental Painting at Sookmyung Women’s University. After moving to the United States, she continued her second MFA in Painting & Drawing at University of Oregon, and graduated with an honor of the Dean’s Graduate Fellowship. She received her Ph.D. in Oriental Painting at Hongik University, Korea (2013).
In 2016, she was selected as one of the representative artists for “Korean Artist Project 2016” held by Korean Art Museum Association and Art Council Korea. She has received many grants and fellowships, including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2014), Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture & Art Council Korea (2011), and The Anderson Ranch Artists-in-Residence Program (2009). Major exhibitions of Song’s work have been held at 63 Art Museum, Seoul (2016); Jeju Museum of Art, Jeju (2014); Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, Jeju (2014); Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, Seoul (2014); Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwangju (2014), Tacoma Art Museum, Washington (2009); and Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Oregon (2008). She currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
